Undeclared Mission

Undeclared Mission is a sculptural work centred on an etched copper document whose authorship remains unknown. The text, titled Undeclared Mission of Russia, entered the artist's personal archive approximately ten years ago and, as she understands, circulated through multiple hands prior to that. Presented as a non-official internal document, it articulates narratives that function as an implicit mission statement, while remaining unacknowledged within formal state declarations.

Suspended by a heavy-duty industrial metal chain, the document is treated not as historical evidence, but as a materialised internal script – one that organises power, consumption, and violence into a coherent ideological logic. Through its physical exposure, the work foregrounds the gap between declared intentions and concealed operational thinking, drawing attention to how language functions as infrastructure rather than communication.

Based on the artist's analysis, the document reflects narratives that appear to have circulated informally among officials within the Russian Federation years before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Read today, it offers insight into patterns of state behaviour widely characterised by international bodies and political institutions as terrorist in nature, revealing mechanisms of internal persuasion and modes of influence exerted both within society and across international relations. Undeclared Mission positions text as form, testimony, and burden – a fragment of language that persists materially while destabilising the ethical foundations of political continuity.
