The Weight of Tomorrow

The Weight of Tomorrow is an immersive room-based installation constructed from 355 slip-cast ceramic bricks developed through repetition, accumulation, and material experimentation. The work grows from the artist's interest in childhood construction, play, and the responsibility of imagining future realities while carrying inherited memory and rupture.

The installation unfolds through three interconnected groups. The first incorporates raw ceramic bricks containing iron-rich soil from Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. These elements carry reinterpreted symbols derived from Cucuteni-Trypillia culture, a prehistoric civilisation active c. 5500-2750 BCE across present-day Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania, known for cyclical ideas of time and continuity.

The second group includes blackened forms, cracked glazes, and peeling, skin-like surfaces developed through firing experiments. These textures recall damaged interiors, unstable architectural surfaces, and traces of deterioration while retaining structural endurance. A third group introduces diverse ceramic bricks with varied colours, glazes, and surface treatments. Their accumulation expands the work into a modular environment where each element remains distinct while contributing to a larger spatial field.

Throughout the room, overlapping audio of children's voices, play, laughter, and meditation creates an atmosphere where innocence, memory, care, distraction, and inner stillness coexist. Through sound, light, labour, and modular growth, The Weight of Tomorrow reflects on building the future as a fragile collective process shaped by childhood, cultural continuity, trauma, responsibility, and hope.
